  • March 2008

Since returning from Christmas The Judd School has continued their success in the Schools Indoor Rowing League. The Year 9 Four and Eight teams are top of their league winning both the January and February events. Congratulations to them all and good luck in the last two events

The staff team are also doing considerably well. They are currently 1st in the league, only one point a head of 2nd place. The team consistently come 1st or 2nd in each event so have a very good chance in topping the league at the end of the competition. The team are extremely competitive and so are training hard to maintain their position.

On Thursday 28th February the school entered the Kent Schools Indoor Rowing Championships for the first time. The Year 9 rowers entered to teams of four in the relay event and came 1st and 2nd. Congratulations to Ryan Redman, Henry Croft, Will Grist, John Austin, Sam Hair, George Willis, James Osborne and Jerry Cummins. A number of them entered the Year 9 Individual event too. Henry came 2nd, only 10m behind the eventual winner, and Ryan came 3rd, only 11m behind Henry. Well done to you both. A further significant result was James Farrington of Year 12. He entered the Year 12/13 Individual event. He eventually came 5th, however the top four places went to junior GB rowers from Maidstone Rowing Club. These four boys were impressive to watch and James did tremendously well to top the non-GB rowers. A great day for The Judd School.

The exciting news to report is the result of the staff team. In October the staff team were knocked into second place by a team from Dorney Lake. This month the staff team have excelled themselves and come top, beating the 2nd place team by 0.5 seconds. The staff are currently second in the league so it is all to play for now.

On Saturday 3rd November 2007 Mr Tomkins took part in the Fours Head Race. The race is a distance of 4½ miles from Chiswick Bridge to Putney Bridge. Over 500 boats took part in the event, with 43 boats being in the same category as the boat Mr Tomkins was rowing in. The conditions were perfect which resulted in a pleasing 17th out of the 43 final placement. The following website gives details of the race and results and the pictures illustrate the pain the competitors were going through! Mr Tomkins is the one with sunglasses on.

The 2007-08 season has began extremely well in the School’s Indoor Rowing League. The Year 8 champions from last year have returned and entered a team in both the Year 9 Eights and the Fours. They are top of both leagues with five more events to follow during the year. This is a fantastic achievement. The boys have remained committed and focused and determined to match last year’s victory.

This year the staff, feeling competitive, decided to enter the tournament. The team of Mr Hathaway, Mr Stephens, Dr Wright and Mr Sharkey rowed 1000m in 2 minutes and 55 seconds. They are second in the league with a team from Dorney in first position with a time of 2 minutes 40 seconds. The Dorney team I expect are teachers and coaches from Eton College!!

The interest in rowing has continued to grow in the school and now 16 Year 7 students regularly come along to rowing club on a Wednesday. They decided to enter a team of four in the tournament and came 9th. Well done to them and remember the only way is up.

The Year 8 rowing team TRS has won the School’s Indoor Rowing League 2006/07. Unfortunately they came second in the last event in March, but overall received 597 points out of a possible 600. This is the first time the school has entered into the event so topping the league is a fantastic achievement. Congratulations go to the entire team, led by their captain Ryan Redman.

The Judd School took part in its first inter-school rowing competition on Monday 26th March 2007. Three boys from the successful Year 8 team, TRS, competed in a small tournament against Oakwood park Grammar School. Each competitor in the Year 8 event had to row for 3 minutes. The Judd boys comprising of Sam Hair, Henry Croft and Ryan Redman won their event beating the opposition quite convincingly. Ryan rowed a distance of 785 metres, Sam rowed 802 metres and Henry topped the chart with a distance of 806 metres. In the pairs event Henry and Sam joined forces and rowed over a distance of 500 metres. Again they beat the opposition with seconds to spare.

Congratulations to the three boys. This event, along with the Schools Indoor Rowing League, marks the beginning of the development of Judd School rowing. If you would like to get involved or want to know more please see Mr Tomkins or contact him on mark.tomkins@judd.kent.sch.uk

    Yr8. Judd Untouchable

The Judd School team from Tonbridge set another new round record and won again for the fifth straight time finishing 17.8 seconds ahead of new entries Tong High School of Bradford. With almost a 30 point lead they can't be caught and similarly Derby Grammar School in 2nd have a 23 point cushion ahead of Bedford Prep in third. With fourth placed Wribbenhall fading away it looks likely that the top three are now set.

The Year 8 Rowing Squad TRS have again won the School’s Indoor Rowing League beating the second place team by 18 seconds over a distance of 4000m. This result means that Judd have won all five events of the year with one remaining. Good luck to the squad for their final event which will take place before Easter.
